In a previous Cisco CCENT accreditation exam tutorial, many of us brought up broadcasts and the potential involving a broadcast storm. (If you skipped that one, go to my website’s Courses section. ) In today’s tutorial, we’ll discuss several different normal network devices and how they assistance to limit broadcast propagation – or occasionally, how they carry out not help!
In the “do not necessarily help” department, we’re going find hubs and repeaters. These two devices operate with Layer 1 involving the OSI one (the Physical layer), and their single purpose is to be able to strengthen the electrical signals sent over the cable. They don’t have anything in order to do with turning or routing, and they usually do not support to limit contacts. (A hub is simply just a repeater with additional ports. )
One the other side of the coin end involving the spectrum, we all have routers. Routers operate at Level 3 of the particular OSI model (the Network layer), plus by default routers do not ahead broadcasts. They can be configured to be able to “translate” certain transmit types into unicasts, but you’ll learn more about that in your CCNA studies.
Since routers perform not forward messages, there’s a misunderstanding that routers have nothing to do with broadcasts. Routers can indeed generate messages, and they can take them – nevertheless they will not likely ahead them. That’s a good important distinction.

Involving these two two extremes, we discover switches. Changes operate at Layer 2 of typically the OSI model (the Data Link layer), and the standard behavior of a new switch is to be able to accept a transmitted and forward this out every other single port on that switch apart from the port that first received the broadcast.
If that will sounds like a whole lot of broadcast forwarding, it is! In case we provide an 80-port switch then one interface receives a transmission, by default a duplicate of that broadcast is going to be forwarded out the other seventy nine ports. Probably, not really all of all those hosts connected in order to those switchports need to see that will broadcast, and giving unnecessary broadcast results in an unnecessary use of network resources, particularly band width.
Luckily for all of us, there is a way to configure a Cisco switch to limit which ports obtain that broadcast, and even we’ll take a look at that method in the next installment involving my Cisco CCENT certification exam article series!
